... the oft-touted "best show ever" was played on Mother's Day?

You guys don't need a link. You can find it.

I have no idea if it's the "best show ever," but I know not to argue with a mom. Particularly this one.

actually i never realized this, and i've heard this show so many times!

i think there are at least a dozen or more performances that could be considered better than 5/8/77 imho. of course, i 've often said 8/27/72 is 'the best show ever' but that is just my subjective opinion, too.

certainly, one could easily make the argument for it being the best of '77 (i have touted it as such) although the more i listen to this year the more i realize that many of the performances in this show aren't as definitive as many people claim. of course, some are (NFA, Dew, etc.) but there is just so much good music in this (or any) year, and it is all too subjective, that it is hard to say definitively what really is 'the best.'

on the other hand i also i think it has become 'cool' to knock this show and call it overrated, which i don't think is the case either - it's a damn fine performance no matter how you slice it.

I think the whole idea of "best" is a useful fiction, particularly if you're talking about the whole ouevre. (Hey, I bet I haven't used that word many times since art history classes!) Useful cuz it points folks in the direction of outstanding stuff; a fiction cuz, well, how can you really pit, say, a 69 or 77 StSt against each other in any meaningful way? Basically it's an Oscars race. The "nominees" are pretty much guaranteed to be good, but what the heck does "best" mean? Cliff's wine-tasting numbers and Dhamma's pluses are more meaningful, cuz there can be any number of 100s or double pluses.

Still, I love lists, of course. They're fun and useful. As long as you don't take it too seriously. And "best" or not, "overrated" or not (whatever that means), this is one heck of a great show!!!

Did you also know that it was snowing when they are tumbled out of Barton Hall with their brains still leaking out their ears...

I thought it was weird that they played OMSN on Sunday May 8, but the previous night in Boston they did not.

... at the end of Mama Tried, Phil says “Thanks Mom”

“Mama tried to raise me better but her pleading I denied
That leaves only me to blame 'cause mama tried”

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms!
